Eating the apple was only a symptom of a decision to take control of their lives, not believing God had their best interests in mind. Theologians call this "original sin" in contrast to "sins" or bad behavior resulting from original sin. \par \pard\sa108\qj In Genesis 1-3, God created mankind, dealt with a major problem before the fall in \cf3\ul Gen_2:18\cf0\ulnone , established work, maintained an empowering relationship with mankind and charged them before the "fall" to:\par \pard\sa108\qj\tx1170\cf4\f2\fs24 n\f1\fs20 "Be fruitful and increase in number,\par \f2\fs24 n\f1\fs20 Fill the earth,\par \f2\fs24 n\f1\fs20 Subdue it, and \par \f2\fs24 LVAL&#n\f1\fs20 Rule over...every living creative" (NIV)\cf0\par \pard In their haste to "be like God" or be in control Adam and Eve also lost access to the power and resources of God to accomplish the "original mission." The original charge to Adam and Eve must have included the abilities and resources to complete the charge. There were no public schools or training facilities. Investment banks, The World Bank and governments were not available to finance global development. So who were Adam and Eve to rely upon to accomplish God's purpose for mankind? \par \par \pard\sa108\qj Christ begins His final conversation with the disciples by revisiting the fundamental issue of Genesis "who is in control?" In \cf3\ul Joh_12:23-26\cf0\ulnone , Christ addresses "original sin" not "sins" (bad behavior) when He lays out the conditions for our restored and empowered relationship with the Father. The quality of our relationship with God is up-most in Christ's thinking. Every thought and action must be grounded in a relationship with God. This is about being in a "oneness" type relationship that then leads to the sacrificed life of \cf3\ul Rom_12:1-2\cf0\ulnone and the empowered life of Romans 8. \par Christ's final summary of His purposes in John 12-17 leads people to ask hard questions, face reality and challenges them to return to the Father. Even though God has your best interests in mind, being "out-of-control" and committing to the sacrificed life is more than a little scary. That's why believing and trusting God is central but difficult.\par It's called faith.\par The goal of lesson #1 is to do the following:\par \pard\sa108\qj\tx180\cf4\f0\bullet\tab\f1 get an overview of John 12-17 and \par \f0\bullet\tab\f1 understand God's powerful strategy.\cf0\par \pard\cf5 In the second week we will go into the specifics of how Christ described His relationship with God and the implications for our lives. Or did they expect something different from their Messiah? If yes, what were they expecting based upon Jewish prophecy? \par \par Students of Genesis have generally concluded that Eve's and Adam's decision to eat the fruit from the "tree of good and evil" was the "original sin" of wanting to "be like God." This is contrasted with the common use of the word "sins" which generally refers to our "bad behavior" not our "bad attitude." They are marks in an enduring book. It is important to periodically benchmark God\rquote s thinking before rather than after a problem manifests itself. This preventative approach does not necessarily eliminate the need for \ldblquote discipline\rdblquote by Church leadership. However, its primary purpose is to focus us on opportunities for positive growth.\par \pard\qj\par \pard\li720\cf1\b\fs23 All circumstances are purposeful: Kay Arthur,\cf0\b0\fs18 the Founder of Precepts Ministries, states, \ldblquote\'85God uses every circumstance of life to make us one with the Godhead.\rdblquote Therefore, we assume that adversity and blessings in a person\rquote s life also have a spiritual purpose. \par \pard\li720\qj\par \pard\li720\cf1\b\fs23 Format for Spiritual Growth: \cf0\b0\fs18 We propose that a close friend, small group leader or Church mentor meet with each interested disciple to complete the initial benchmarking evaluation form that follows. We then suggest that they benchmark God\rquote s revealed truth in Genesis 1-3, John 12-17 and Colossians 1-4. Once complete, they should complete a second or post self evaluation to determine whether there is a change in their thinking after benchmarking God\rquote s thinking.\par \pard\qj\par \pard\li720\cf1\b\fs23 Method:\cf0\b0\fs18 In this self analysis most of the categories require a qualitative versus a quantitative response. It should be fillLVAL(ed out with agreement by at least two parties involved in the process: a disciple of Christ and one interested person. It should be filled out, signed by the participants and filed in a confidential file. The guide should be completed annually to improve its usefulness.\par \pard\qj\par \pard\li720\cf1\b\fs23 Limitations: \cf0\b0\fs18 This form is designed primarily for benchmarking through a self analysis. Eating the apple was only a symptom of a decision to take control of their lives, not believing God had their best interests in mind. Theologians call this "original sin" in contrast to "sins" or bad behavior resulting from original sin. \par \pard\sa108\qj In Genesis 1-3, God created mankind, dealt with a major problem before the fall in \cf3\ul Gen_2:18\cf0\ulnone , established work, maintained an empowering relationship with mankind and charged them before the "fall" to:\par \pard\sa108\qj\tx1170\cf4\f2\fs24 n\f1\fs20 "Be fruitful and increase in number,\par \f2\fs24 n\f1\fs20 Fill the earth,\par \f2\fs24 n\f1\fs20 Subdue it, and \par \f2\fs24 LVAL;n\f1\fs20 Rule over...every living creative" (NIV)\cf0\par \pard In their haste to "be like God" or be in control Adam and Eve also lost access to the power and resources of God to accomplish the "original mission." The original charge to Adam and Eve must have included the abilities and resources to complete the charge. From Christ's descriptions of His relationship with the Father, we will explore in Lesson #3 ChrisLVAL<t's choice of the "vine" in \cf3\ul Joh_15:1-11\cf5\ulnone . In Lesson #4, we delve into \cf3\ul Joh_17:1-26 \cf5\ulnone and Christ's final prayer for Himself, His disciples and amazingly all future generations. Or did they expect something different from their Messiah? If yes, what were they expecting based upon Jewish prophecy? \par \par Students of Genesis have generally concluded that Eve's and Adam's decision to eat the fruit from the "tree of good and evil" was the "original sin" of wanting to "be like God." This is contrasted with the common use of the word "sins" which generally refers to our "bad behavior" not our "bad attitude."
